Yunnan 云南

Snow mountains, rainforest, rice terraces and 25 ethnic groups – all in one province.

Yunnan, "south of the clouds", is China's most varied province. In the north-west the Tibetan highlands rise to the Meili Snow Mountains; in the south lies the tropical rainforest of Xishuangbanna. In between are old towns like Dali and Lijiang, the Hani rice terraces of Yuanyang, karst lakes and tea mountains.

Yunnan is home to 25 of China's 55 ethnic minorities, each with its own villages, food and festivals. The capital Kunming has a mild climate all year round and is where most trips begin.
