Red earth fields in changing colours, a dream for photographers.
About 3–4 hours north of Kunming. Stay at least one night to catch both sunset and sunrise, when the colours of the red earth are at their most intense.

Dongchuan Red Land 东川红土地
Hills of deep red earth, patchworked with green crops, yellow rapeseed and white potato flowers. The colours change with the seasons and are at their best in the soft light of sunrise and sunset. Viewpoints such as Luoxiagou, Damakan and Jinxiu Garden are famous among photographers.
- Best from May to June and September to December.
- Altitude around 2,000–2,600 m; mornings can be cold.
