Meili Snow Mountains 梅里雪山

Yunnan's highest and most sacred peak – golden sunrise at Feilaisi.

In the far north-west of Yunnan, beyond Shangri-La. A journey for travellers who want real mountain scenery, Tibetan villages and, if they like, a multi-day hike.

What to see

Meili Snow Mountains 梅里雪山

Kawagebo (6,740 m), the highest peak in Yunnan and one of the most sacred mountains of Tibetan Buddhism. From the viewing terrace at Feilaisi you can watch the first sunlight turn the snow peaks gold – the famous "golden mountain" sunrise.

  • About 4–5 hours by road from Shangri-La.
  • Altitude around 3,400 m in Feilaisi; the peaks are often in cloud in summer.

Yubeng Village 雨崩村

A remote Tibetan village at the foot of the Meili range, reached only on foot or by mule. Waterfalls, glacier lakes and simple guesthouses make this one of the most beautiful hikes in Yunnan.

  • Allow at least 2–3 days; a good level of fitness is needed.
